Chapter 27 - Amazon Magic

Locratia’s left knee touched the ground, her leather skirt pulled up to her thigh as her other leg bent and stabilized her on the other side. She was bent slightly at the waist and pressing her palm into the ground, her eyes barely open.

“Can you feel it?” she asked, looking up at Ella, her eyes opening slightly. Ella looked back at her. Locratia was a middle-aged woman, her scalp as smooth and flawless as the rest of her skin, and she wore a rune-decorated shawl over her shoulders, which was sewn into a gorgeous, velvet-hewn cape of red and mahogany, which splayed out behind her on the ground. Underneath the shawl was a leather bodice of sorts, also etched with the same sorts of runes, a leather skirt around her waist, with knee-high fur-lined boots protecting her feet.

Ella felt woefully underdressed even with her hand-crafted cloak of concealment, the hood pulled down and bunched up at her shoulders.

She nodded softly. “I can feel it,” she said, and she could. Her palm pressed to the grass-covered ground, she felt rippling vibrations underneath, as if a river was running just below the surface. Her palm tingled with a slight warmth, which moved up into her wrist and twisted around through the muscles in her arm.

“I knew you could,” the Amazon replied. “I could smell it on you when you entered the village.”

“Smell it on me?”

Locratia smiled. “The magic. There are many different kinds of magic users in the world. Wizards and witches, mages, warlocks, sorcerers. They all have their unique twists. Myself, I am a sorceress. Born into an ancient Amazon bloodline of magical protectors.”

Ella looked at her. “So… what am I?” she asked.

“You do not know?”

Ella shook her head and Locratia laughed.

“If you don’t know, I’m not sure if I can tell you, but all I can say, is that you have great power welling up within you, and it is a power that is finely in tune with nature.”

“I’ve heard that before,” Ella said softly. “Zorath told me that when we first met.”

Locratia smiled. “I knew a Zorath once myself. He was a great magic user, a rare breed with what seemed like a limitless connection to the mana of this world, but only a desire to do good with it.”

Ella removed her palm from the ground, and the flesh immediately began cooling.

“Sounds like the man I knew. He belonged to an organization called—”

“—Indigo Shield?” Locratia finished. “Are you referring to the Zorath who was a part of Indigo Shield?”

Ella nodded excitedly. “Yes, yes that was him. You knew him?”

“I did, yes, quite some time ago. I’m very glad to hear he’s still out there doing good.” She smiled, resting on her heels.

“Well,” Ella started, and her eyes drifted down toward the ground.

“Oh, no,” Locratia replied.

“Yes, unfortunately, he died a short time ago. He died saving my life, helping me escape from some mysterious creatures in the Gallowind Wood.”

Locratia’s face hardened, but she maintained a slightly elevated smile.
